Simple Arithmetic Denied By Popular Fancy

The Year 2000 Hailed As The Start Of The New Millennium

On the evening of December 31st, 1999, in its coverage of the celebrations welcoming in the New Year, the media in the Western world proclaimed:

"The first day of the year 2000 was the beginning of a new century and a new millennium."

Even Boris Yeltsin, the then president of Russia, announced he was resigning today (31/12/1999)

"On the last day of the old century."

But the year 2000 is NOT the start of the 21st century nor the start of a new millennium, for it is sanity to always start counting from 1 so it is simple arithmetic to calculate that:

The First century A.D. was 1st January 1 A.D.31st December 100 A.D.

And by adding 1900 years [19 centuries] to these dates:

The Twentieth Century started on January 1st, 1901, and ended on December 31st, 2000.

The NEW Millennium (the Twenty-First century) started on January 1st 2001 A.D.

These simple truths have been denied by popular opinion in the English speaking world, which insists upon giving significance to the change in the appearance of the date (from 1999 to 2000) rather than the sane use of arithmetic.
